Reality: Doing Things You Don’t Always Want To Do

Ugh, chores! Nobody wants to do them, but realistically they are a part of life and we all have them. Many of my clients operate in an all or nothing mindset. If they predict that doing chores is going to be miserable, then they cannot get out of that mindset.

This is where duality comes into play. Coaching clients into accepting that two things can exist at once is an integral part of my work. They can predict that doing chores is going to be miserable AND accept that chores are a part of life. These two concepts of duality and prediction will then help clients turn the orienting gear into a new reality. Each of these gears working together is state-shifting and that is the goal!

By working with these concepts to move gears in low-risk situations during our sessions, I can prepare them for real-life situations. I was delighted to receive this text from a parent shortly after a session,

“That was a great morning! I learn so much from you each time.

Right after hanging up, Lia got into a negative mode because she didn’t like “those words” (telling her the dishwasher needed to be emptied). She said ‘I’m mad’ and got teary. I was able to go with her and talk about how all humans have things in their day they have to do, but don’t want to. And things they look forward to. I gave her examples about myself. Finally she moved into the kitchen and started her chore. Now she is SO positive and exclaiming how she’s going zoom zoom zoom and being ‘efficient.’”

What gear(s) did you turn today?
